Some golf courses have a distinctive aura about them, such as St Andrews, Wenworth and Augusta, the Old Course at Sunningdale is a comfortable addition to this illustrius group.
Sunningdale's Old Course was laid out by Willie Park Jnr. He was appointed by the original committee of the Club to build the course in 1900 with the course opening for play in 1901. It retains a high ranking in courses around the world as a fine example of a heathland course.
The experience of the Old Course is fantastic from start to finish. The beautifull heathland setting, together with some demanding elevations and no real weak holes provides some of the best golf in the region. The holes are lined with mature Pine, Birch and Oak trees, which can make the course very tough for the errant golfer. Infact Sunningdale Golf Club advises visitors that the course is not suitable for high handicappers or beginners, mainly due to the large number of holes that require a long carry from the tee.
Anybody who has played the course will no doubt revere the magnificent 10th Hole. A 475 yard, par 4, the tee shot is played from an elevated tee. This is a magnificent driving hole and regarded as one of the best in the world.
