Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey is widely regarded as one of the best inland golf clubs in England and home to the HSBC World Matchplay Championship. The West course was opened in 1927. Construction on the estate started in 1923 it was one of the first Country Clubs in the UK based on the American idea that golf was not the only leisure activity.

Wentworth boasts a Spa, fitness facilities, tennis courts and swimming pool. The Wentworth estate is home to three golf courses: The East Course which was opened first, The West course opened a year later and The Edinburgh Course was completed in 1980. The East and West golf courses were designed by the famous Harry Colt.

The West course is familiar to millions of television viewers world-wide through the annual PGA and HSBC World Match Play Championships, staged in May and September respectively.

The west Course became the more famous Championship course because of its length, now 7047 yards from the Championship tees. The course is a traditional parkland course surrounded with predominately silver birch and Fir woodlands, with heather and gorse lining many of the fairways. Position off the tee is a premium because of the narrow fairways and the strategically placed bunkers.

The tightly bordered fairways some how heighten the drama, particularly over the closing holes. Few courses in Britain are held in greater respect by the professionals. For the amateurs, it can sometimes seem a long way round, but the opportunity to have trodden the same fairways and greens as the stars is reward enough.

The closing holes provide a true test of golf and make Wentworth quite unique in the fact that it finishes with 2 Par 5's. The holes are 571 and 531 yards long respectively and have provided many a dramatic finish. Two birdies are not always guaranteed, even for the Worlds best players.
