The world famous Ballybunion Golf Links is hailed among many legendary golfing figures as one of the best golf courses in the world. It is renown for its fine development of the natural terrain, which utilises large sand dunes. The course is set against the spectacular backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean.
Located on the North Kerry coast, an area that can hardly be surpassed with regard to its scenic beauty and the tranquillity of its surroundings, the course is always in excellent condition and provides a variety of challenges for even the best golfer.
A true seaside links course, Ballybunion is virtually treeless and a course of sharp contours throughout. There appears to be no man made influence. It looks like a golf course laid out at the turn of the last century.
The contours on the fairways and the greens are what make Ballybunion a great golf course. A golfer is required to play accurate approach shots into the small greens, with not a lot of room to miss right or left. Combined with the winds that are prevalent here and you have a magnificent challenge.
The back nine holes on the Old Course are simply spectacular. The 11th is possibly the most famous and rated by Tom Watson as one of the toughest holes in the world.
