Throughout the world, few golf courses are as revered as California's Cypress Point Club. The Course is set at the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, along the white sands and steep cliffs that border the Pacific Ocean, on the tip of the Monterey Peninsula. Almost as many superlatives have been used about the beauty of the location, as have been used to describe the course itself. The beauty of Cypress Point is the equal to its more famous neighbour Pebble Beach.
Every true golfer would love to play Cypress Point, but unfortunately only a lucky few will ever get the chance to play it. With only 250 members, mere mortals are unlikely to get a game.
Seth Reynor was originally drafted in to design and build Cypress Point but sadly died before its completion. Alister Mackenzie stepped in to complete the job during the Mid Twenties.
This golf course design style along with the early preservation of the Monterey Peninsula, allows us see the natural beauty that this course was originally designed with.
The Ocean views are spectacular, with the golf course set in amongst an ancient Cypress Tree Forest. At the very tip of the peninsula lies the par 3 16th hole, which many consider to be the best golf hole in the world. If you cant carry the ball more than 200 yards into the prevailing wind, then this hole will cause you some major problems with the Pacific Ocean providing the ultimate water hazard on this 231-yard one shot hole. Many golfers have racked up some big numbers here.
