In 2007, Pinehurst Number 2 celebrates it's Centennial. For many experienced golfers, Pinehurst No. 2 is the ultimate golf course. Pinehurst doesn't compete on the grandeur scale with Pine Valley or Sand Hills. Neither does it have the scenic glory of Cypress Point or Royal Portrush. And yet, Pinehurst No. 2 has attracted ardent admirers for decades.
Tommy Armour wrote, "The man who doesn't feel emotionally stirred when he golfs at Pinehurst beneath those clear blue skies and with the pine fragrance in his nostrils is one who should be ruled out of golf for live. It's the kind of course that gets into the blood of an old trooper."
Ranked as one of the best golf courses in the world, No. 2 is challenging due to a combination its length, topography, unruly routing, water features and green size. Strategic layout tests both the long and short game.
Carefully placed bunkers gaurd crowned greens that are notorisously difficult to hit. The domed greens with their numerous slopes make it hard to keep the ball on the putting surface.
The greens themselves average 5,500 square feet, which is quite normal. However, more than half of the total green space is un-cupable as they slope off on all sides. This leaves tiny targets in the 2,500 square foot range which smaller than Pebble Beach's notoriously small greens. Pinehurst No 2 has been called the hardest golf course in the world from within 40 yards.
Wide fairways meander through the broad corridors of pine trees and difficult green complexes. The wide fairways need golfers to aim for one side or the other, depending on where the hole location is, to have any chance of a decent approach shot.
Pinehurst No 2 has been the site of more major golf championships than any other course in the country, including hosting the 2005 U.S. Open Championship.
