However, there is little time to enjoy the scenery here as every hole is lined with treacherous hazards. Dr Laidlaw Purves of the Royal Wimbledon Golf Club designed and established St Georges Club in 1887. Named St. George's, it was to become the English rival to Scotland's St. Andrew's. In 1894 the Club hosted its first British Open Championship, the first time the Open was played south of the Scottish border. Royal status was bestowed on the Club by King Edward VII in May 1902.
